The focus of the REU site is Metallurgical Engineering research with an emphasis in art and history. There is significant evidence that a richer learning environment can be created in engineering by establishing a context within the liberal arts. In addition to being involved in research projects to develop specific technical skills in engineering, students in this program are engaged in unique supplemental activities that support learning the societal context and potential impact of their research. Workshops - Students engage in hands-on or "kinesthetic" materials science and metallurgical workshops that put present day research in a historic context.

Historical & Cultural Significance Seminars - Students engage in hands-on or "kinesthetic" materials science and metallurgical workshops that put present day research in a historic context. Some of these activities have included seminars in the following:
  • The Importance of Broader Impact in Research
  • Women in Science and Engineering
  • Creation of the City of Presidents Bronze Art Sculptures
  • Ornamental and Functional Metal Throughout History
  • The Historic Use of Metals in Native American Plains Indian Art
Outreach - REU students have mentored and interacted with middle and high school students as part of South Dakota School of Mines and Technology summer outreach programs. These programs have included:
  • NASA Space Observation Learning and Research (SOLAR) Camp
  • ASM Materials Summer Camp for High School Students
  • SDSM&T Gear-UP Program for Native American Students
  • STEPS Summer Camp for Middle School Girls and Boys
Developing Collegial Relationships - Students have the opportunity to build long-lasting friendships through many activities and field-trips throughout the summer.
